SNS Group have recently replaced their conventional Unisys ClearPathNX system with one of the new Libra 590 "Metered" systems in May 2004, giving an estimated reduction of 30% in IT costs. Computer Performance International's RG Solutions product has been a vital part of this exercise, both before and after the implementation. Gerard Kluvers, Infrastructure Manager at SNS, made the following comments:
"Typically being a bank, the way we used our Unisys MCP mainframe resources over a 24-hour period had quite some variation.
In average, the % of system usage came down to some 50 %, with peaks of 100 and lows, especially during early morning and online-only round 10 %.
We always contracted or bought our systems related to peak performance, in order to cope with Year-end and Monthly-end processing needs.
With the RGSolutions software and reporting we were able to convince Unisys, that they had to change their pricing strategy towards us.
This year that finally came into effect.
We used the RGS summary report, and the average of used processor seconds on a monthly basis. With the Workload definitions we could even distribute this consumption to the 4 software environments, in fact IT-clients.
With these figures in hand we could contract Metering over a 6 year period (a bucket full of RPMs/MIPs) with a monthly balancing process between Unisys and ourselves.
This is now working and in effect. Our projection is this will lead to 30% less computer costs.
Along the path of implementing this structure we have received much help in discussing ideas, even with Unisys, changing reporting and even measurement of the mainframe resources in order to achieve this.
The cooperation with CPI was always very constructive and direct and we hope to continue that for a long time to come.
We are always willing to act as reference for the implementation."
